SLICK TREEING

my names ryan im new on here .and i was just wanting some help.. i got a 4 year old blanket back walker.. and i get up some times in the mornin to run my dog.. and she has been slick treeing .. some oldtimers say, .. and she is treeing hard as she would if she just ran him up .. but does anyone have any sudjestions on how to break this dog from doin this... its hard on me.. to get to a dog thats screamin its head off for a tree with nothing in it

Ryan, does your dog do this all the time?? A coon is one smart critter, some dogs will go to the first tree a coon goes up and tree. If your dog is slick treein all the time, then she needs to have your help. I have walked a dog away from the tree and around the tree to see if he or she can find the track, when I say around the tree I mean out away from the base of the tree. Are you sure it's not a den tree, and I always check the surrounding tree. A coon can cross over to another tree, are you huntin in the same woods? If you hunt the same woods, a coon will get smart quick. If you are, try huntin it from the front to back or one side to another. I usually do what nitetimber says if I know for a fact it is a slick tree. I will put my dog on the lead and not say a word just walk way and start circling the tree to see if she hits another track. I dont know what kind of light you got but before you pull your dog off of a tree make sure there is nothing in it or like Nitetimber said make sure they didnt cross. I myself have been guilty several times of yelling at my dog for a slick or pulling her off and check the tree later and there would be a coon up there tight in a fork and I would have to call my dog back and let her tree on it again and pet her up and let her know I made the mistake that time. It has happen to me more than once. Let us know how it goes.

i agree with the method of leading the dog off the tree . i start with a 20 foot circle , an work out from there. if i haven't pick up a track within 100 feet , i will go back , an shine a bit more.the trouble with most slick trees is ,you don't know if your in a heavy feeding area, where the coons have been up and down several times before your dog comes in an trees . this is why i'm not real fast at (correcting) my dogs . if i put them in that kind of situation , that's on me , not my dogs. sometimes , as handlers ,and trainers , we are to quick to blame are dogs for somethings that is are fault .
